Enabling DRM audio in TFF for Spotify?

Hi folks, question for the community --

One of the big gaps in PowerPC livability these days is how hard it is to get actual streaming radio stations to work. I've tested some of the major ones and I'm going to center my comments/suggestion on Spotify because I've actually gotten audio through TFF on it -- more progress than with other services.

Spotify's web player warns you that your browser isn't compatible, but it *will* play 30 seconds of any song! This is definitely a DRM thing, as it points you to a help doc on how to enable DRM audio in FireFox -- the setting is missing in TenFourFox. Here's that doc:

I guess the problem is that TFF doesn't have WideVine compatibility. Is that a limitation of the processor type at this point? Any prospect of this changing?

There are two major limitations on doing this: 45ESR, on which TenFourFox is based, has only an incomplete EME implementation, and then the CDM needs to be written. There are some open-source Widevine implementations that could be adapted but the work to do this is non-trivial.

The bottom line is that it's probably possible, but it's more work than I can personally do right now.

That's too bad, but I appreciate you explaining the limitations here. I think this would be a great thing to eventually have come to TFF, although I have concerns about performance, especially on the iBook G4 I use.

Performance may or may not be an issue, depending on how the stream gets authenticated. But there's a lot of work to get even to that point, unfortunately.

<bump> to 2019.. has there been any progress by anyone, towards being able to use modern DRM encoded services like Spotify or Netflix on PPC Macs?

    Hello,
I really love to use TFF, works great, I can use my old iMac almost same as computer from 2021. Only what I miss is DRM. If there is a chance to do it.. Or maybe I can help somehow? Can you give me some instructions what is to do?
