Must Have Addon for People who Save a Lot of Tabs....

Dear Cameron and TFF Group,

I've been having a long-time problem with favicons and recent bookmarks disappearing (have steadily upgraded since TFF 6) and found out that it was due to a long-standing corruption of the places.sqlite db. After much swearing and Googling, found this addon that probably should be in everyone's TFF bag-of-tricks, especially if you save a lot of tabs, as this is said to increase the likely-hood of probles with 'Places' after a crash. Have also just made an Intel Friendly version too. You might ask why an Intel user would want it with current versions of Flash, and the answer is that is enables the downloading of a number of videos (like those from Vevo) that cannot be grabbed by Video Download helper or any others! Also, for those with slower connections, the videos will load and play much faster in QuickTime from sites like abc.com without all the Javascript stuff happening in the background. Lastly for users that install rtmpdump (Intel Only), there are many additional sites the script can support.

After exporting all my bookmarks and the password db from the last readable db, I've been using this app every month and it WORKS!
Yesterday, a particular site (http://shop.ouya.tv/) crashed the browser 3 times in a row (with 20+ tabs open), and sure enough on checking with the addon, the places.sqlite had re-corrupted. But after running the all option (you access the addon from its Preferences, it was able to re-index and fix the problems before they got out of hand and sure enough bookmarks saved earlier that day were retained.

Sadly Mozilla, I think, does not explain adequately how much hinges on 'Places', and how wrong it can go, but this little addon, when used regularly, can really prevent big problems later.

Adam, thanks for the suggestion. It's worth a try if users suspect the problems they see are due to places.sqlite corruption. I'm a bit concerned, though, that the latest version is from February 8, 2012. Is it still in development?

I don't understand how this extension helps with downloading videos.

BTW if places.sqlite is deleted or corrupted, bookmarks are always restored at the next restart from the last .json file in bookmarkbackups. Favicons and everything bookmarked after the last backup will be lost, though.

I'm interested in your crash at http://shop.ouya.tv, which I can't reproduce. Do you have a crash log and/or steps to reproduce?

Very sorry, disregard the 'videos' part of the discussion

as that accidentally got pasted into it after corresponding with a PPC/Intel Mac dev regarding a video app I made.

The most important part of the issue with 'Places' is that corruption can subtly loose bookmarks and such over time and not be apparent at first.  Things just get lost.  Doing this maintenance every month or so, can limit the damage and make the db fixable/savable even after corruption, rather than forcing TFF to delete it and all the new bookmarks it holds.   This is REALLY important to users who leave the app open and don't necessarily create new bookmark backups often.

Sorry, I don't have the logs anymore from the Ouya store, as I have since run OnyX and the logs got purged, but the issue was that I click "Open in New Tab" on two items it is caused a javascript freeze that forced me to force-quit.  Happened 3 times in a row.

No problem. Any PPC compatible video (helper) apps are, of course, also of interest here :-)

If you get another crash at Ouya, would you be so kind to post the log? If it's reproducible and not a Mozilla/Firefox bug, we might be able to fix it.

Adam, I noticed here (and in the "browser window position" thread) that your email messages with quotes come through empty. There may be a problem with Tender receiving very long mail messages. You might want to re-post what you said directly on the website, or without the quoted parts.
