new tab tile page
According to http://tenfourfox.blogspot.de/ the new tab tile page was patched out entirely. May I ask why this was done? I always considered this a very useful feature, especially for my 84 year old dad, who always visits the same 8 pages and is a bit confused by each change. Wouldn't it have been enough to change the default in about:config?

Between 31 and 38 Mozilla made changes to the underlying technology powering the page; it doesn't work anymore on 10.4 and in fact will crash. There is no easy way to fix it and it was simpler to disable it completely. Sorry.
My best alternative suggestion is to consider loading his typical sites into the bookmark toolbar.

I see. Thanks. Unfortunately on a 1024x78 screen any toolbar wastes space. However, I got him to use the down arrow in the URL bar, which gives almost the same list....
Just out of curiosity: Is it the preview images which doesn't work? If this is the case, would it be feasible to simply let them empty?

Yes, it's the preview images. I haven't investigated how feasible (or desirable) it would be to just have the page titles themselves, and there are some higher priority projects for the browser I'm currently working on.
Maybe consider using the bookmark menu drop down icon? (To the right of the address bar.)

Regarding 38's lack of website tiles in new tabs, I guess I'm sticking with 31.7 forever. Too bad.
