Emojis and other icons not displayed correctly
Lately I have noticed that, in many cases, emojis and other icons are not being displayed. Instead, the "generic gif" icon (a small square with some tiny indecipherable text) appears in their place.
TenFourFox Version is FPR5; computer is a dual processor G4 MDD running OS 10.5.8.

That's actually not a "generic gif" icon -- that's the icon the font rendering subsystem makes when a character is requested that no font on the system provides.
A font like Symbola can restore most of these emoji: http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/
It is an OpenType font compatible with 10.4+.

That seems to have solved the problem, which I noticed began when several of the internet forums I subscribe to "updated" their software.

Prior versions of forum software usually used actual small graphics for emoji, "smilies" and so on, but now since most current OSes and devices have emoji support built-in, they've moved to displaying with those. Fortunately fonts like Symbola are easy enough to install on older operating systems and restore this support.
