When I READ a PDF file on my antique Mac using TenFourFox the "fs" are f---ed. They are replaced with tic boxes. When I READ the same document with Safari , it is fine. Same version of Adobe reader as far as I know. However when I save the document and then read it with ADOBE, the document is normal.

The glyphs you're referring to are actually "fi" digraphs (f + i). This is technically a Mozilla bug since it affects various other minority platforms, but they haven't shown much interest in fixing it.

For a variety of reasons including this one, I'm planning to expose an option in 45 to disable the internal PDF reader (whether or not I can fix this and other related bugs). If you'd prefer simply not to deal with this, you can go into about:config and set pdfjs.disabled to true.
