), in which we do mention that some YouTube videos, notably those
with advertising requirements, will simply not play in the QTE. You
could try one of the video downloader add-ons for those instead.
There is no good way around this.</p>
<p>That said, I personally encounter these videos relatively
rarely. It may simply be a factor of the videos you are trying to
watch. If no video works for you, ever, as your last statement
implies, then I don't have an answer for you.</p></div>Cameron Kaisertag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142012-10-30T20:32:33Z2012-10-30T20:32:35ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>Thank you for your reply.</p>
<p>Updating Perian to 1.2.3 solved half the problem by allowing
HTML5. The flv still cannot be displayed but I download them using
Flash Video Downloader.</p>
<p>Regards.</p></div>Pierretag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142012-10-31T11:49:12Z2012-10-31T11:49:16ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>I may have misunderstood, but is the QT Enabler supposed to work
with Flash videos or does it require the HTML5 availability ?</p></div>Pierretag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142012-10-31T15:04:47Z2012-10-31T15:04:47ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>The QTE has two modes. When accessing YouTube, it uses an
undocumented Google API to find the internal H.264 equivalent for
the video and play it (which is why advertising-only videos don't
work, because they don't usually have H.264 versions). It does not
actually play the .flv. It might be possible to do this in a later
version, but the H.264 is usually better quality.</p>
<p>Otherwise, it does require HTML5 video and audio to function,
and selects the H.264 video or MP3 audio preferentially (otherwise
whatever is available).</p></div>Cameron Kaisertag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142013-02-11T14:32:03Z2013-02-11T14:32:06ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>10.5.8 on a 7450MacMini; Safari getting slower and slower;
switched to 10.4Fox last month. Read about flash work-arounds;
installed perian 1.2.3 and both Quicktime Enabler 116 and
VideoAndAudioDownloader 0.1.6.</p>
<p>To install Perian, you double click on the pane; QTE, you drag
and drop onto a 10.4fox window; I'll come back to V&AD. Once
I've clicked and dropped, there's no way of verifying that anything
has happened, so when I get "file is not a movie file", I end up
trying installing them again. QTE behaves exactly as it did before,
whereas Perian does at least say "you've already got this one; do
you want to replace it?"</p>
<p>After that, I still get "file is not a movie file" though. I'm
trying all sorts of content. You can't TELL which has adverts,
though most does not, does it? Anyway, they ALL get the two
quicktime messages: "Going to open" + the URL, and "The movie could
not be opened The file is not a movie file".</p>
<p>Shouting "O yes it is!" doesn't seem to help either.</p>
<p>As for V&AD, it says right click in the toolbar and select
"customize...". If I do that, I get a whole host of icons to choose
from, including the icons for the OTHER two add-ons I've got,
adblock and another, but not V&AD OR QTE . . .</p>
<p>Any suggestions anyone? Is it something I need to do in QT,
perhaps . . .</p></div>nick.s.barnetttag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142013-02-11T14:41:42Z2013-02-11T14:41:42ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>The "is not a movie file" is not due to ads; it's due to an
H.264 profile QuickTime doesn't support. There is nothing the QTE
can do about this. Some Tiger users have had luck installing the
avc1Decoder components linked from the QuickTime enabler page, but
I don't believe these have been tested on Leopard. Perian does not
support these profiles and now that development has ceased, it is
unlikely it ever will.</p>
<p>In some cases downloading the video entirely first makes it
playable. Any of the available Firefox video downloader add-ons
will work for this purpose. However, there is no known way for the
QTE to know in advance which ones are encoded with an unsupported
H.264 profile.</p></div>Cameron Kaisertag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142013-02-11T16:33:14Z2013-02-11T16:33:15ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>Thanks, Cameron!</p>
<p>Good news: I changed one of the boxes on the add-ons page of
V&AD (from ftv to MP4) and tried the "customize..." option
again . . . and there was the icon!!! So I dragged it to the bar
and it now allows me to download and convert youtube videos and
play them in quicktime. Result, I suppose!</p>
<p>I'll keep my eyes open for more on the h.264 front.</p></div>nick.s.barnetttag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/202231142013-02-11T19:15:37Z2013-02-11T19:15:37ZUsing the QuickTime enabler<div><p>Thanks again; I should have used this to reply. You can remove

<li>Why are you using TenFourFox 10?</li>
<li>Have you tried repairing permissions on your desktop? This
suggests the place where you are saving your download has the wrong
permissions on it.</li>

I am using this Mac machine from way back when I was employed in
advertising/graphic arts and I love it!</p>
<p>Having upgraded to OS X and using Safari, I have a lot of
difficulity using the web. Safari is very unreliable for me and i
can't seem to upgrade my system to solve this problem.</p>
<p>That is why I went to TenFourFox....it seems to be more reliable
than Safari but i can't access video?</p>
<p>As you can see, i am NOT an advanced user, but I love my mac and
would like to continue with this G4.....</p>

I still support the QTE and offer it, but because many sites use TLS 1.2 and QuickTime 7 doesn't support this, the MP4 Enabler will work on many more sites even though it is slower.</p></div>Cameron Kaiser
