and thus doesn't need the OSX java engine. However there are many
sites which are Java based and require a java response of 1.6 or
higher to operate. An example is Karl Jeakle's Mortgage Calculator.
When I go to Browser Hawk using 10/4 it states that my java is 1.5
which is what OSX thinks. It would be helpful if I could select the
value of that variable. The BrowserHawk link is:<br>

does include its own advanced JavaScript interpreter and compiler,
which we maintain. However, JavaScript cannot run Java applets.
Apple has never supported Java 1.6 for any Power Mac under any
version of OS X; even in 10.5, only Java 1.5 is supported, and
TenFourFox will not run Java applets for security reasons due to
several known cross-platform exploits in Java 1.5.</p>
<p>You may be able to install a version of the OpenJDK, but you
would need to use a different browser to enable the plugin, since
TenFourFox has not supported plugins since version 6.
Unfortunately, we can't offer support for that here, and I'm not
sure if any version of OpenJDK will work with 10.4.</p></div>Cameron Kaisertag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/287067592013-09-09T19:11:02Z2013-09-09T19:11:02ZJRE Version<div><p>I have installed OpenJDK but when online and remotely queried,
the browser reports 1.5 preventing operation with sites requiring
1.6.</p></div>Dennis Fagantag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/287067592013-09-09T19:23:10Z2013-09-09T19:23:10ZJRE Version<div><p>You'd have to look at how the Java plugin is configured. I can't
advise on that, since we don't support it.</p></div>Cameron Kaisertag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/287067592013-09-09T19:27:53Z2013-09-09T19:27:54ZJRE Version<div><p>Cameron, if you goto:<br>
<a href=

you will see that it reports your java script engine as ver.
1.5<br>
That is my problem. I am a neophyte but that response must pass
through your browser from OSX. It shouldn't.</p>
<p>Dennis</p></div>Dennis Fagantag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/287067592013-09-09T19:39:54Z2013-09-09T19:39:54ZJRE Version<div><p>JavaScript in 17.x is actually version 1.8.6 (and again, has
nothing to do with the Java version). See <a href=
"https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/About">
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/A...</a>
and <a href=

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/javascript/article.php/3470971/Ja...</a>
for more information on the version differences. TenFourFox 17.x is
equivalent to Gecko 17.</p>
<p>BrowserHawk should not be able to detect Java (again, NOT
JavaScript) at all. If it does, you have plugins enabled, and are
using the browser in an unsupported configuration. That said: 1.5
is indeed the version of Java that comes with 10.4 and 10.5. The
Java <em>plugin</em> is what actually runs within the browser and
it is configured to use the system JRE, not OpenJDK. The plugin may
not be aware that you have OpenJDK installed, and you will need to
alter the plugin's settings or certain components on your system to
use OpenJDK instead of Java 1.5. Again, that's something I can't
help you with here.</p>
<p>I assume that the Mortgage Calculator you are referring to is
<a href=
"http://www.drcalculator.com/mortgage/">http://www.drcalculator.com/mortgage/</a>
and this is a Java issue, not JavaScript. On my install of 17, it
(correctly) says I do not have Java installed, because plugins are
disabled and Java therefore will not run.</p></div>Cameron Kaisertag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/287067592013-09-09T19:45:52Z2013-09-09T19:45:52ZJRE Version<div><p>Cameron,<br>

Thanks for your help today. I am now writing on a Win7 laptop
which BrowserHawk reports ver. 1.7.0_25 on both Java and Java
script versions. As TenFourFox doesn't support plugins you
might consider finding a way to report that you have a java script
engine and its version.<br>
