question is, wouldn't this in theory be less effective performance
or bloat-wise than a direct Mozilla repo build? Surely the Altivec
code is useless to Snow Leopard?</p></div>questiontag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/153149092012-04-16T20:50:54Z2012-04-16T20:50:54Z10.6<div><p>The only reason I mention 10.6 building is possible -- and mind
you, I don't know if anyone has actually tried -- is to try to
<em>build</em> TenFourFox faster. That's it.</p>
<p>As far as actually <em>running</em> it on any Intel system, I
agree it is not too useful because of the Rosetta overhead.
Particularly with the JIT, TenFourFox translates the JavaScript to
PowerPC assembly <em>using</em> PowerPC code which Rosetta has to
translate, and <em>then</em> Rosetta has to translate the code it
generated! Even more incredibly, this is actually faster than the
JavaScript interpreter, but not by much.</p>
<p>For 10.4 Intel users there isn't much choice if you, for some
reason, cannot upgrade to 10.5 or 10.6, but for 10.5 and up you
might as well just use Firefox. And we don't support it anyway.</p></div>Cameron Kaiser
