1) Connect the G5 to a network and try loading tenfourfox.com in Safari. If it loads, the site will display a section in a box starting with '▶▶ If your browser can't establish a secure connection'. You can download the TenFourFox Downloader, which in turn will help you download TenFourFox. This way you won't need another computer.

2) From a PC or newer Mac (or a Mac which already runs a recent version of TenFourFox) you can download directly from SourceForge. It doesn't matter if it's Windows, Linux or Mac OS. Go to tenfourfox.com and choose 'TenFourFox for G5 processors', then transfer the downloaded zip file with a USB flash drive (don't unzip it on the Windows machine). You'll need about 70 MB of free space on the USB drive.

Chris (chtrusch)tag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/485790892020-08-26T19:53:23Z2020-09-13T07:44:53ZDownloading TFF new installation.

Thanks Chris,

I'm concerned about the security implications of using the Tiger version of Safari. The USB flash drive download method sounds more reliable, so I'll try that when I next visit my friend. Amazed that the browser is only 70MB. But you say it is a zipped file, which I dont suppose will unzip on the raw Mac? I don't have any software yet, other than the standard OS10.4 instal. So I guess I will also need an unzipping app downloaded onto my USB drive from my friend's PC.

Just double-click the zipped file on the Mac. Mac OS X 10.4 has such a tool built-in, it'll just work. Please do not use a third-party tool since it may damage the TenFourFox application.

Chris (chtrusch)tag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/485790892020-09-10T08:24:01Z2020-09-13T07:44:53ZDownloading TFF new installation.

Hello Chris,

I've not yet got round to connecting my iMac G5 online. (Been using my tablet).
I did download Tenfour Fox on a family member's PC onto a usb stick as this was easiest at the time. I have uploaded it onto my G5 and everything looks OK. However, I note that the file size is 193.4 MB on the usb stick. Is this normal? It did not unzip on the Mac. So I am assuming that it automatically unzipped on the PC as soon as it was downloaded and without me knowing.

Considering what you said about third party unzipping tools, perhaps I should delete this and download it direct via Safari as you suggested?

Kind regards,

Andrew

It's not advisable to uncompress it on a Windows PC and then use it on the Mac. Please use the USB stick to transfer only the zipped file (62.9 MB), then uncompress it on the Mac. Or simply use Safari to download on the Mac as described in comment #1 1).

Chris (chtrusch)tag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/485790892020-10-01T01:44:27Z2020-10-01T01:44:28ZDownloading TFF new installation.

Hello Chris, I had a session at the weekend and got it all working. I deleted the USB copy which I hadn't actually installed. Safari could not download direct from the Floodgap site, but the TFF downloader worked great and I got the latest FPR27 in one download.

Sending this on the G5 now. Many thanks for your advice in setting this up and for making this useful resource available.

Andrew
