TFF FPR 27 and OS X 10.4.11 not working
Hi, as of two days ago (7 October) I am unable to access the web using TFF FPR 27 and OS X 10.4.11. I am running a G4/933 Quicksilver 2002 with 1.5GB of RAM.
I can reach a few old sites that don't have HTTPS requirements, but everything else is unavailable. Switch to OS X 10.5.8 and TFF FPR 27 works again!
We upgraded to fiber connection a few weeks ago, but everything was working fine under the new system till two days ago.
I normally have IPv6 switched off. I tried switching it back on, but still no web with OS X 10.4.11.
Is anybody else having issues with TFF FPR 27 and OS X 10.4.11?
Thank you.
Regards,
Peter

Make sure the system date and time in 10.4 are correct. Does that help?

Hi Chris, yes I have the machine set to check it's time with the Apple time servers automatically. I tried toggling that setting Off/On but still no internet.
Thank you.

What is the exact error message you get when you visit this site?

Hi Chris,
the following appears:
"Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.wikipedia.org.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that TenFourFox is permitted to access the Web."
TFF FPR27 has no issues reaching Wikipedia from 10.5.8 though.
I also discovered today that my domain name hosting service subscription had expired on the 4th October. At the moment I am only using this service for email. So, sorted that and now my email has resumed. I am wondering if there could be a link between the two events?
As of five minutes ago AppleMail 2.1.3 (OSX 10.4.11) and AppleMail 3.6 (OSX 10.5.8) are working.

I develop and test on 10.4.11, so I can tell you unequivocally it's not something about Tiger generally. There is probably a configuration difference between the two operating systems. It could be some other tool or extension you installed (including outside of TenFourFox) which is interfering.

Hi Cameron, that's my feeling too. However I've not installed any new software since February when I had to revert to my old G4 as my three G5's all died. Miss that 2.5 Quad. We've had guests staying recently and their kids lept onto our new modem to get the WiFi password to stave off gaming withdrawl. I wonder if a service on their iPads could have changed a setting in the modem or installed something into it?
Should I perform a hard reset on the modem perhaps??

Peter, in TFF on your 10.4 installation, please go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click the button 'Copy text to clipboard', then paste it int a .txt document and attach it here to a post.
If the troubleshooting report looks ok, there isn't much more to troubleshoot (as far as I can see) for the browser. Then you likely have something on your 10.4 installation (firewall) or network/router (device-specific security setting) that blocks port 443, for example.

Hi Chris,
okay, I disabled Ad-Ons, same message as before, no connection.
Cheers,
Peter

Then the problem is most likely outside of the browser. What it is exactly will be very hard to troubleshoot remotely and is outside the scope of this helpdesk. I would probably start by creating a new Mac OS X user and see if it has the same problem. If it does, the next steps are resetting the router to factory settings and creating a fresh 10.4 install on an external hard disk, booting from there to see if the problem persists (to prevent a possibly unnecessary re-install of the OS).

Hi Chris & Cameron,
Progress. I switched off the Apple firewall - still no connection via Firefox. So I then checked what else was loading and saw "Little Snitch".
What do I find - a user created rule "Deny Firefox connection to Port 443"
!
How I managed that I'm not sure. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I used to be a SysAdmin. Mind you that was back in the days of Mac OS7.x and Windows NT 3.5.1.
Thank you both so much for your patient assistance. I deserve to sentenced to using Windows 10 for life.
Peter

That would do it. No worries. I will close this ticket; no reply is needed. Any reply will reopen it.
