Tenfour Fox doesn't quit
Hello,
Apologizes if my question has still be published (I don't find anything about with the search engine) and for my poor english.
Not even but many times, TenFour Fox will not quit normally : I have to force it to quit by Cmd-Opt-Esc
Mac G5 - OS 10.4.11 - 14 Go RAM
TenFour fox since FPR versions approximately
I use TFF V45.21.0 and if I use a previous version like FPR8 nothing change.
- It seams that if I surf on few websites, TFF quit normally but I'm not very sure.
- My G5 is on 5 to 6 days a week (not off but suspended) and now I quit TFF every day (or force it to quit)
- I purge the memory regularly (about:memory --> Free Memory --> click on GC, CC and Minimize Memory Usage) but nothing better.
And since few monthes, Thunderbird (V3.1.20) has the same problem but less often.
Have you any idea to fix this issue ? Maybe a common file between the 2 "Mozilla" apps ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Sergio

There's pretty much nothing in common between Thunderbird and TenFourFox. This sounds more like you have some hardware issue. You could try resetting the profile as an easy fix, but I don't know if that will make much difference based on your description (see "How to reset your profile" at the lower right).

I have a G5 iMac OS 10.5.8 and have loaded the latest version of TenFourFox. Neither previous version nor the latest will quit without using Forced quit.
Even worst, neither the earlier version (which used to work fine) nor the new version with open any internet site. It just keeps saying “connecting,” but nothing happens.
I’ve tried trashing the cache and profile. No improvement.

Hello there ,first things first, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! for keeping this and thus my old G4 and G5 macs fully functioning and safe on the Internet! *well, mostly*
Now, just letting you know, that same issue here too.
I have just picked up an Old G5 1.8Ghz DP for data recovery and then its mine! so happy Days!
it also means there are 3 partitions , several user profiles on each one *and some of them have bad sectors, so skipping back and fore, changing Profiles etc*
And just letting you know, same issue here.
It had TFF already on one partition I do believe. (Now a little confused) and everything seemed fine. This was one of the first things I started to install on this (not been used since 2012!!- MockShock!) To get it up to spec then everything seemed dandy!
I then turned OFF a pile of tracking cookings via the online, turn off a bunch of trackers here who are affilieated with this organisation of niceness* kind of thing, and I THOUGHT I installed ONE extension, I think UBLock, by going to the site and clicking on the .xpi file and it asking if I would want to install it.
WHy, YES! this is why I am here :)
Well, carried on surfing some, had some issues, (data recovery on going, knackered HDD) forced reboot . and now
same as mentioned above.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/ was the addon.
but, upon checking TFF I find that it has NO adds (not even that above) and hangs on exit and doesnt save state of anything I change in the preferences.
And I then have to force quit.
SO I will poke around, but if there is anything you would like me to do, info etc, feel free to let me know.
And it went from working to having to force quit everytime, in the space of a day.
that's it, and again, thank you SO MUCH for keeping these fine Beasts Viable! :)
ok cheerio
me

Schpengle, this is almost impossible to diagnose; the short answer would be: You're having bad sectors on your HD -> exchange your HD and try again. On the new HD, create *one* Mac OS X user account, and *one* TFF profile and try to trigger the problem in a manner that's reproducible for others. It's important to note how long you wait before you have to force quit the application; TFF uses a lot of memory and may take a while to quit in some circumstances.
Reproducible steps would be e.g.:
1) startup TFF, go to google.com
2) click TenFourFox > Quit TenfourFox
3) TFF does not quit
4) after 60 seconds TFF still hasn't quit

Thanks for the reply but I was just adding confirmative feedback to the previous posters so not sure if they have bad sectors too...
If I close TFF I , the app window shuts immediately but then Iwait about 70 seconds with the menu bar still there, then if I'm lucky I get the likes of this in the apple crash diagnosis report which then appears.
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000

9 XUL 0x09548e88 js::ExecuteInGlobalAndReturnScope(JSContext*, JS::Handle<JSObject*>,
there is obviously more to it than that, but I dont wish to blather crash reports all over the input :)
100% reproducible across on 3 different installation drives.
It has only just started doing this now.
I also have a G4 Powerbook running TFF (luckily for me it's the 7450 Cpu! phew. still supported for video with tff, however its 667MHz so pretty lame at displaying video anyway.
SO on the G4, 7450 running version 45.22.1 all is good and the window shuts immediately followed shortly after by menu bar.
I will post this now and check out early TFF version on this G5 and see what I can find out.

That's a null pointer exception. You'd get that, for example, if you ran out of memory. Do you have any system extensions or custom kernel extensions installed? For example, some weird behaviour was seen on prior systems using certain audio extensions.

Well, not that I am aware of, his Drive was fairly basic install (although, awkwrdly, I am JUST installing some audio apps on it now) but OTHER drives (the main one, now somewhat buggered) had quite a bit of music recording stuff going .
However, I have noticed that iStat Menus (versio 2) that I had installed on here from one of the PowerPC archive sites, seems to have dissapeared! and Ive uninstallled it , reinstalled it and that seems to be not behaving as expected.
I should think that woudl be doing some deep diving in the internals, so not sure if that would be using kexts or suchlike.
I'm happy to fiddle about for you and check out whatever you would like me to look at if it helps :).
Otherwise, TFF seems to run fine -but has no history! it obviously hangs on exit each time, then crashes after about a minute or more of exiting, and has amnesia when restarted. It also looses the downloads history...and when running , with downloads accomplished, I can see them listed in the downloads, when clicking on the icon, but then if I click *show all downloads* it says there aren't any!
but 5.50am here so I should probably go to be now :)
ah the excitement of Revitalising archived Hardware! yeah!
SO yes, just suggest what or where YOu would like to me investigate and I'll fire away> I have saved the last 5 or 6 crash diagnostic reports if your interested.
:)
ok and thanks, I'm still awesomly impressed with you guys keeping this going!
THanks! (oh and I used a KIM for programming, way way back in the day , on my apprenticeship :) - just been checking out the rest of the site -love it!)

Hello again ,just wondering if you would have such a a thing as a *debugging guide* or such like so that I could go through and try and eliminate the *usual suspects* in this sort of thing?
:) I will also try TFF latest on the Tiger Partition on here now .I thought I had but, I was wrong! odd.
Support Staff 9 Posted by Cameron Kaiser on 02 Apr, 2019 02:36 AM
A great idea, except if we're already past working with a clean profile, removing add-ons that may be interfering, etc., we're kind of past "the usual suspects."
A hardware test is never a bad idea either. Sometimes bad RAM can do things like this and our computers aren't getting any younger.

Hi and Ok!
There was another User Account on here, on the Tiger Partition, which turned out to have been set up and NOTHING ever having ever happened on it :) Evuur.
The problem fox child is on the Leopard Partition.
So I've just run all the (Three instances of :) ) Tiger updates! Yes, they still work. How sexy.
And then, the very first App to install is of course, your fine TenFourFox.
And I Can report that on this funky new Tiger Account install I have a funky new Functional Fox :)
.... which quits :D
I shall continue to tinker with that other User account on the Leopard Partition, so if I can get to the bottom of it. So does this help and stand me in good stead to do some routing around on that other account on this same Fossil beast? :)
Ah, got to love it!
And thanks for your time and this great, modern functionality! awesome.
