The recent 38.6.1 update zip file will not open.
When I double click on the updater zip file I get the message
{Unable to unarchive "TenFourFoxG5-38.6.1.app.zip" into Downloads. Error 1 - Operation not permitted.} I have tried this with the browser closed; moved zip folder to desktop, downloaded from the three different servers suggested by SourceForge.net. I've checked my security settings and there should be no difficulty. I downloaded the 38.6.0 updater last week and installed it with no problem last week. If I don't go to the New York Times for news is this update of any real use to me? Help!

Please verify the integrity of the zip file you downloaded with the instructions on the Hashes page: https://github.com/classilla/tenfourfox/wiki/Hashes
If the hash is valid, I'd consider repairing permissions on your drive; it's possible something accidentally changed them. The zip files all compute valid here.

Thanks Cameron. Unfortunately it did not have the result you predicted for a valid file. That being said I must ask to verify the typing instructions for the Terminal program. Just to confirm I used a lower case L not a number 1 (one) in two locations (ssl and mdl60) for the instructions.
If that is not correct please let me know. I have downloaded a screen pic of the response in Terminal.

It's an L in openssl, but a one in -ripemd160. You probably will find it easier to cut and paste.

The very same problem here .. can't open the file .. says "Operation not permitted". Seems to be a bug at your end mr. TenFourFox, 'cause everything on my Mac just works - no issues with installing apps or other stuff or whatsoever, just this particular update ..
Uninstalled the last version 38.6.0, then reinstalled - no prob - works fine.

If the hashes don't match or the file size makes it obvious that the zip files were not downloaded completely, just download them again. I'm using both G3 and G4 7450 on my Macs (and did a test download for G5) and they're all fine.

*Thanks Chris,*
*Well, tried couple of times to redownload, but still the same - can't be
opened. There's no issues with permissions on my G5 either, checked it
twice, everything's ok.*
*Yesterday I installed a different version of the latest TFF on my G4 7400
(running Tiger) without a hiccup, so perhaps it's still a download issue as
you say .. just a SourceForge server's bad day.*
*Ok, tomorrow I'll download this zip with the different machine, then put
it onto a usb stick and will try to install it from there .. let's see ..*

Chris
I Did the copy and paste but got the same result:
unknown option '-ripemd160/Users/Mac/Downloads/TenFourFoxG5-38.6.1.app.zip'
options are
-c to output the digest with separating colons
-d to output debug info
-hex output as hex dump
-binary output in binary form
-sign file sign digest using private key in file
-verify file verify a signature using public key in file
-prverify file verify a signature using private key in file
-keyform arg key file format (PEM or ENGINE)
-signature file signature to verify
-binary output in binary form
-engine e use engine e, possibly a hardware device.
-md5 to use the md5 message digest algorithm (default)
-md4 to use the md4 message digest algorithm
-md2 to use the md2 message digest algorithm
-sha1 to use the sha1 message digest algorithm
-sha to use the sha message digest algorithm
-mdc2 to use the mdc2 message digest algorithm
-ripemd160 to use the ripemd160 message digest algorithm
I have checked permissions and all appears to be ok; I also unlocked admin user to allow installations without being asked. I am going to try to re-download the zip file. You mentioned a shortened size of the zip file as an indicator of incomplete download - what is the full download size of the file?

Chris & Cameron
Thanks - after the last attempt I deleted the file and went back and downloaded the zip file again. Everything went fine - for whatever reason I'm grateful. My Safari browser (v5.0.6) just will not open and stay open - it starts to load and then just quits??!! So the TenFourFox is the best option. Thanks for all the work you do to keep it available to the great unwashed 10.5.8, and earlier PPC users out here, who are too stubborn, cheap, to upgrade with every change in the wind from Cupertino.

For future reference, there must be a space separating the option -ripemd160 and the file path. And the file sizes are noted on the Sourceforge download page.

As an experiment I downloaded the file using a Windows PC, put it onto the usb stick and dragged it from there right to the G5's desktop. Unzipped and installed it with no single problem. This time the name of the file after downloading looked different .. when it failed, it was just "TenFourFoxG5-38.6.1. zip". Now it is "TenFourFoxG5-38.6.1.app.zip".
As pappy45 already said, your work keeps these good ol' PowerMacs still up and running spite of all. Thanks a lot guys!

I'm thinking there must have been a busted Sourceforge mirror that just got resynched. That would at least explain what you're seeing.

Okay, I've been having the same error appear--unable to download-- and that's a new one for me. I don't know enough to use the above advice from Chris and Pappy45, although next I'll go verify permissions. But I've had no other downlad/BOMA Archive Helper problems w other apps.
Can I go directly to another site for the updated 10-4-Fox 38.61? I've run through a few different different mirrors already, each of the 3 times over the past few days since the new update, all with the same Error msg.
By the way, my last attempt was just before 6pm, after Cameron's last post that the busted mirror must have been resynched.
Thanks for all you do!
Best, Zi

All I can say is: Try again and keep watching the download progress indicator. If it aborts before the file is completely downloaded, you won't be able to unzip the file or open the resulting application.
If the file was downloaded completely, make sure you're not using a third-party unzip tool. Right-click the downloaded .zip file, choose Open With… and then "Archive Utility" if you're on 10.5 or "BomArchiveHelper" if you're on 10.4.

I realize SourceForge hosting can be troublesome, but unfortunately we have about 25,000 downloads every six weeks of files around 45MB in size, which works out to over 800GB in transfer a month. My policy has never been to accept donations, and SF is about the only place that allows that kind of transfer size on a free tier. I just tried it again and I had no issues, but it could be the mirror I was connected to.

Thanks, Cameron, I will keep trying. So far, it seems that the entire file
downloads. Maybe the download will work better now that I'm at work, on
fibre-optic wifi.
And thanks, Chris. BomaArchiveHelper is the decompressor that I'm using.
Have a wonderful day!
Best, Zi

I was having the same problem downloading TenFourFox 38.6.1. (Mac G-5 running 10.4.11). Files downloaded with names like QW8IRCbr.zip.part and sizes like 41.9 MB. The names do not appear in the Download folder, but rather on the Desktop. When I double click the file, the computer tries to read it with Acrobat Reader but this fails.
If I remove ".part" then I get an error message from the Archive Utility: "Unable to unarchive QW8IRCbr.zip into "Desktop" (Error 1 - operation not permitted.)
Cameron...Thank you very much for your suggestion to look at the Permissions. I changed the file's "open with" from Acrobat Reader to BOMArchiveHelper and expanded the permissions. Now it works even leaving the .part on.
Alan

Alan, .part file and 41.9 MB means it wasn't downloaded completely. You can put this file in the trash and try again. Sourceforge doesn't seem to like us right now.
