38.6 constantly crashing

I have a G5, the slowest 1.8MHz processor, and for the last few releases 7450 worked better for me than the release for G5s.

But with the new release, neither version works. Times fonts turn into strings of boxed capital A's, webpages never finish loading, and worst of all:

When TenFourFox crashes now, which it does within minutes of every time I open it, I often can't even force quit, because it seizes the whole computer. I have to shut down the machine.

You've got a few things mixed into this report, so I'll make some general comments:

    • The issues you describe with fonts are due to incompatible webfonts. This isn't particular to 38.6. If you regress to a previous version, you'll find them there too. The bug is actually in OS X's Apple Type Services.
    • We can block bad webfonts as a workaround, but you need to provide URLs of sites where it consistently goes wrong. 38.6.1 is scheduled for release later today for an urgent security issue, and it also fixes issues with bad fonts on the New York Times. If it does it on every site you go to, however, this is not that issue.
    • TenFourFox should not be able to completely bring down the operating system, and I've never had something like that occur on any of the test systems even with the crashes I can replicate. 10.5 reacts worse to certain incompatible webfonts than does 10.4, however, so on a system with less than 2GB of RAM it's certainly possible for it to exhaust the addressing space.
    • The 7450 version will of course run on a G5, but many JavaScript operations will be slower than they should be, so while it may work better for the sites you're on it is still not my general recommendation.

(As a workaround, you can try going to about:config and setting gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled to false. Downloadable fonts will not appear, so sites won't look correct, but if that's the problem it should enable them to "work.")

Thanks. I look forward to the update. I have exactly 2GB of memory.
