from the Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Stardropdown menu,
which included two backups for today (for no clear reason), the
first of which was corrupted and smaller in size: 87.3 KB and no
items compared to 101 KB and 313 items.

The icons have not returned for the bookmarks (mostly), but if
they don't that isn't a big deal.

Jason Pratttag:tenfourfox.tenderapp.com,2012-01-07:Comment/390437802016-01-29T20:50:45Z2016-01-29T20:50:45ZAnd then suddenly, all my bookmarks disappeared

1.9.2.28 is Firefox 3.6.28 ("Namoroka" being its codename). By
starting 3.6 inadvertently, you have probably corrupted your
profile. We warn people about this in the release notes, and we
never supported switching back and forth. For more information, see
this thread:

As you already discovered, you can probably restore your
bookmarks from an automatic backup by going to Show All Bookmarks,
clicking the star icon, and choosing a backup point from the
Restore item. The corrupted one probably resulted from starting up
after accidentally running 3.6. The icons will return as you start
browsing to those sites again and they become cached once more.

I'm not sure what's up with the start page, but that looks like
something your ISP may have inserted as we don't run a Windows ASP
site. The home page can be reset from the preferences panel.

Cameron Kaiser
