Clicking produces two pages ...
TFF (38.4.) is my default browser on G5 Mac running 10.4.11.
When I click on a link in Mail TFF opens two pages - the one I want and a 'homepage' window. This also happened in the previous version of TFF.
I have tried refreshing TFF, but no change.

You can use Command ⌘ instead of Control ^ on Mac

This also happens on a new iMac running the latest Firefox and Yosemite.

Still creating an extra (start) page in 38.5.0 when email link clicked.

Given comment 1, this is probably a Mozilla bug, but did you try what this user discovered to fix it?

The only thing that works is to remove AdBlock Plus ...
So I'll put up with it till they fix it.
