adding file types and applications

I have been able to download and open a file type .aspx from a state website using Firefox. After downloading 38.2.0 and in earlier versions, I cannot open or download these files. I have tried opening the files inTenfourFox, and it will not open them. It never prompts me for the application to open the file, just opening an empty window or tab with nothing displayed. Why can't you set up a browse button in the preferences window to browse to a file and add the type, then set the application. How can I resolve this problem in inTenfourFox?

This is actually a .pdf file, not an .aspx file. I think what you were seeing in Firefox was a plugin execute to display it. TenFourFox does not support plugins, although 38 does have built-in PDF preview support.

That said, without the actual link, I can't really tell you what's going on otherwise.

You are correct that a PDF reader will open this file. However 104fox will not automatically open or allow a download. I will email the link later today. Thanks

The starting link to the problem is below (a State of Oklahoma web
    site).

    http://imaging.occeweb.com/imaging/OGWellRecords.aspx

The listed above is the link I see when accessing through
Firefox. When input, it pulls up a list of files. When I click
on one of those files, it does not change the address,

instead a file selected is downloaded to the desktop and is opened
    by Acrobat reader.

When I follow the same link in Safari, and then click a file, I get
    the following address:

    http://imaging.occeweb.com/OG/Well%20Records/00000018/
    OCC_OG_2G7539J_0QQ8DKT.pdf

    and the file opens

For some reason, Firefox is not opening the link of the selected
item, just downloading and opening without showing the address.

Tenfourfox will not even download the file or open the file.

I get a form to fill out. I don't know what values you're using and I'd prefer to use the same ones you search for so that I get the same list. Please specify.

I never got an answer to this question:

When navigating to sites, I am prompted to open a link to a document, perhaps a
tiff, perhaps a different extension, ie .aspx, etc. These are file types created by the website operator, outside of my control. When I go to the link TenFourFox 38.2.1 does not have an application to open the file. How can I ad any file type and the default application. Where is the add button to add a file type and the application to open it, and why is there a bar to enter data which does not do anything.

Hello Mike, which link do you refer to?
Generally, see this Firefox help article:

I appreciate your attempt to help me, but once again I am not getting
exact instructions on how to add a file type or a default
application. I have a site, which will give me access to say
a .tiff file, or a .jpg file, or a .aspx file (There are dozens of
file types not on the list. Forget the type, it does not matter,
just assume a type not on the list of file types and applications).
Do not get specific with a specific file type, any file type not on
the list). When I click the link, the program does not ask me what
I want to do, save, open or otherwise. I get a screen that says
about:blank because the program does not know what to do with the
file type on the link. If the file is not on the list, the program
does nothing. It does no prompt me to add a file type, save the
file, or anything else. This makes the program almost unusable,
since you have not idea what type of file the program may be
accessing from a link. All I want to tell the browser to do is open
the link in an external application, but without being able to tell
the program what to do with a file type not on the list this is not
possible. Omniweb and safari offer you a +/- sign on the file type
application screen, allowing you to add file types by simply
navigating to a file, then add the application to handle the
program. What is wrong with that. You have a link, when you click
it how do you add the file type if it does not ask you to add a file
    type.

Mike, I can't reproduce your issue without an actual link/web address.

Also, unless you can demonstrate a case in which Tenfourfox behaves different from Firefox (indicating a bug on our end) complaints about general usability and interface design should be addressed to Mozilla: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org.

The link below is to a state website, public domain, with a file
attached which is a .tif file. Paste this link and tell me what
    happens.

I get a dialog (see screenshot attached) asking me what to do, save or open with my default image viewer (JView in my case, will usually be Preview). In Preferences>Applications I can change what's to be done with .tif files ("open with app", "save", "always ask"). This is outlined in the Firefox help article I linked above.

[edit] I also checked this with a fresh Firefox user profile that doesn't have this file type in Preferences>Applications yet: The first time a .tif is encountered, the same dialog comes up and the file type is added to the list in Applications automatically.

When I go to Preferences>Applications I do not have a .tif file
type. Mine go from Stuffit Archive to Unix Tape Archive to Vidoe
Podcast to Wave audio, Web feed etc. I would like to know how you
    got .tiff in your applications.

I didn't get it in, it's added automatically. What's the default application that opens a .tif on your Mac when you double click it? The file type may be listed in Preferences>Applications under the appliction name (e.g. "Preview.app Document" or something), not the file suffix.

My mac knows to open tif files with photoshop. Tenfourfox does not know what to do with tif files since the tif file is not a listed file tpe with an application. Does tif show up in your file type list?

Also, .aspx is not shown as a file type, and the browser will not open the link or launch an application since that type does not show up. Is there a way to add a file type in the preference>applications list? It is not being added automatically.

.aspx files are Microsoft Active Server script pages. No Mac program opens those.

More likely, the script page is trying to set a particular type of file. That's why I need a URL to see what's actually coming over the wire.

Interesting. My file type list looks like this (screenshot). If I change the .tif file association systemwide to open with another application (e.g. Photoshop) it shows up in TFF's Preferences>Applications after reloading the preferences page.

I have no idea why .tif was never added to your list. You can attach your mimeTypes.rdf (from your Firefox profile folder in Library/Application Support) in your reply so I can have a look at it if you want to. Or just delete this file as outlined in the Firefox help article I linked above to reset all download actions to the defaults.

I have attached the mimeTypes.rdf file from my Library->Mozilla/
Prfiles/Default/rgau7li2.slt file folder. Let me know if this means
anything to you. I see one notation as to .tif files, nothing
    for .aspx files.

I do not understand why I can click on the following link,

    http://imaging.occeweb.com/imaging/OGWellRecords.aspx

put the following in the "Legal Location" box

    1014n26w

and then get a form that looks like the following:

    Page 1 of 1 3 Documents Found

    1
    ID
    Form
    Legal_Location
    API
    Well_Name
    Operator_#

choose item three and get the following in Omniweb

    http://imaging.occeweb.com/OG/Well%20Records/00000008/
    OCC_OG_39A1O3D_0BAAC5R.pdf

    which opens a PDF file.

When I go through the same steps in TenFourFox and click on the third
record, I get nothing, no action whatsoever. I assume the link
should pull up a PDF file, just as it does in Omniweb, but Tenfourfox
does not seem to do this.

With regard to .tif: Your mimetypes list seems confusing. It contains "always ask" and "save to disk" for .tif (or: .tiff??), also to open it with GraphicConverter, which may or may not be installed on your Mac. Given the state of this file, I recommend to quit TFF, delete the file (or drag it to the Desktop to keep it as a backup just in case), then restart TFF. It will create a new mimetype file with defaults, which should remedy your problem.

I can't test your aspx problem because occeweb.com seems to be down at the moment (timeout).

For the record, I just tried your steps, and the PDF appears just fine on all of my TenFourFox test systems (in the browser, even, using the built-in viewer). I think this is a local problem with your profile. Chris' suggestion is a good place to start. If that doesn't work, I'd reset your profile completely; see "How to reset your profile" at the lower right.

I went to my Library under my user. I opened the Mozilla folder in
    the library ( User/Library/Mozilla/Profiles/Default/rgau7ii2.slt )
    and deleted the file mimeTypes.rdf

    Restarted my machine.

Opened the website and it did nothing. It does not ask me
anything about the file, and the url stays the following:

      http://imaging.occeweb.com/imaging/OGWellRecords.aspx

Its like TFF does not send anything when the link to the file is
    clicked.

Also, no mimetype file is created at this point.

How can I create a profile just for TenFourFox so I can keep on using
Mozilla when TFF screws up. Why does TFF not just copy the Mozilla
preferences over to its own file in the Library, so it would have its
    own unique items.

TenFourFox is supposed to be a drop-in replacement for Firefox, including picking up everything and moving forward; that's what it was always intended as.

You can try this simple test: quit TenFourFox and go to your home folder, Library, Application Support. Drag the Firefox folder out of it onto your desktop (make sure there is no Firefox folder remaining in Application Support). Start TenFourFox. You won't have bookmarks or settings temporarily, but they're still in the old folder on your desktop. Try doing the steps above and see if it works.

If it does indeed start working, then stop TenFourFox, put the Firefox folder back into Application Support (replacing the new one that was recreated) and please follow the instructions on how to reset your profile below to see if it can be fixed in place.

If it doesn't, I don't have any other suggestions for you other than another browser. Something has changed on your system that I can't reproduce, but at least OmniWeb seems to be serving your purpose. You can replace the Firefox folder with the old one if you like at this point.

(You've got the wrong folder. Not Library/Mozilla, but Library/Application Support/Firefox.)
