Zotero/Word integration
I'm using TFF 24.2.0 on an aluminum G4 powerbook.
I have installed Zotero in TFF for collecting and managing references - but it doesn't integrate as it apparently should with MS Word (2004). Word's Zotero add-in is present, with its own palette, but if I click on 'insert citation' I get an error message: "Zotero - Error An error occurred communicating with Zotero. Please ensure Firefox is open and try again."
In my other wordprocessor, Nisus, it's possible to drag references from the Zotero window in TFF into my document, but not in Word, so I'm now rather stymied.
When TFF starts up I get this lengthy error message:
Installation could not be completed because an error occurred.
[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80570015 (NS_ERROR_XPC_CI_RETURNED_FAILURE) [nsIJSCID.createInstance]" nsresult: "0x80570015 (NS_ERROR_XPC_CI_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: resource://zotero-macword-integration/installer.jsm :: :: line 66" data: no]
Is this an incompatibility with TFF, or do I need to look elsewhere?
Hope you can help with this.
All the best,
Bob Hughes (Oxford, UK)

Hello Bob,
> Word's Zotero add-in is present
Where do you see it? Is this a Firefox extension or is it a plugin?

Okay, I've looked into this. It's a proper extension, not a plugin.
I tried Zotero Word for Mac Integration 3.5.7, which installs cleanly but doesn't work at all, not even the preferences dialog comes up, probably because the dlyb it uses is Intel only (??), and Zotero 4.0.17.1, which works (somehow) but produces the install error message you mentioned. I use Word 2004 but have never used Zotero or anything like it. I have no idea what's going on. Maybe someone with more experience in this field can help.

There's no dylib in Zotero 4.0 -- it's all JavaScript, so it will work with TenFourFox. The problem is the Word for Mac plugin. As Chris correctly points out, the dylib that comes with it has no PowerPC fork, so since it cannot run, the TenFourFox browser addon cannot talk to it. I don't think there is any way we can solve this problem. Sorry. :(

One final note: there is a bug here, but it's Zotero's, not ours. Their Word for Mac plugin does not indicate the architecture, so TenFourFox will treat it as universal and try to install it. This, then, fails when it actually tries to initialize itself. If they change their install.rdf to indicate it is Intel only, TenFourFox will properly complain and refuse to install it in the first place.
The Zotero 4.0 extension is platform-agnostic, so it has no such issue.
Something like changing the installPlatform to Darwin_x86-gcc3 (or having two entries, one for _x86-gcc3 and _x86_64-gcc3) should do it; I'm not clear on the exact values. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Add-ons/Install_Manifests bob, you can direct them here if they have questions.

Generally: They say on the website (http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation) that the Word plugin 3.5.7 is compatible with Word 2004-2011. Word 2004 is a PPC only application, and Rosetta's gone from recent OS X versions, so there's still hope they fix it.

Chris and Cameron -
Many thanks for looking at that so thoroughly. Will you pass this on
to Zotero? I'll do so anyway. It'd be good if they could fix it, as
I'm now fairly heavily committed to Zotero, with a project deadline
coming up fast.
All the best,
Bob

I don't have any contacts there, so going through their user support system would probably be best.
