Bookmark icons

My technical problem is that I suddenly lost most of the icons
from my Bookmark pull-down menu. I am using TenFourFox 17.0.4 on a
PowerPC Mac G5 running OS 10.5.8, and have been for some time.

What do I need to do to restore the icons? They are missing in Firefox also.

By the way, I don't agree with you on totally avoiding e-mail or telephone contact. You can still do advance screening with your problem database. There are questions which you implicitly know the answers to — your clients do not. Are my bookmarks at risk? I have many more than I would want to lose. Which profile? What is OpenID or an OpenID provider? How do you access the discussions? You are making it unnecessarily difficult, which is not the way to build a reputation and a following.

But thanks for having responded eventually. At least the door is now open.

Please see my previous reply, in which I requested a screenshot so that I can have a better idea of what the problem looks like.

    Hope this illustrates.

    Here it is explicitly:

What you're actually seeing are the placeholder icons. This usually occurs when the actual icon has expired from the cache or been manually cleared. If you visit the site in the bookmark (assuming it still has an icon), does the bookmark menu update?

Simply put, some update and some do not. But they all seem to
actually work, even without the icons.

But I have seen somewhere on your site the recommendation to clear the
cache (which I could not find, anyway). That would seem to be
    counterproductive.

So, how do you think this actually happened? I did not knowingly take
any action to make it happen.

I suppose this means that now I need to visit each site, of which I
have well over a hundred to do. Is this going to keep happening? It
is not a major operational problem, but it is a bit unsettling to see
things happen that I do not understand, because who knows what else
    might be going on?

    I still need your counsel.

I don't have any other reports of this being a widespread phenomenon, and it is not reproducible on the test machines or my personal G5. That said, it could certainly be a local issue.

You may be thinking of a profile reset; stuck settings may have unexpected effects on the cache. Since 17, Firefox/TenFourFox has a built-in profile reset option which can repair these kinds of issues -- see "How to reset your profile" at the lower right.

The fact that some favicons do update on access, and some still appear, indicates that the database storing the favicons and bookmarks is still operational.

Thank you for your last answer, but I am still worried about losing my bookmarks. Could that happen when I reset my profile?

Although I can't guarantee you won't lose them, the Reset Profile button specifically makes an effort to keep them. You can, however, back them up: go to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks, and under the star icon menu at the top, select Backup. If something goes wrong, go to the same menu and select Restore > Choose File, then indicate where the backup was saved. (Some users prefer to export to HTML, which can be done from the same menu.)

The second method on "How to reset your profile" is, however, a more complete cleaning. However, as part of that process, your bookmarks are specifically exported so that you can bring them back.
