TenFourFox G5 v.31.2.0 input slowdown
When I start TenFourFox G5 v.31.2.0 it behaves normally. As I use it the typing response gets slower and slower...sometimes 6 seconds per letter, really unusable. If I quit TFF G5 and restart it, then the typing is normal, only to slow down again. Copying from another application and pasting into TFF G5 has the same 6 second pause, but then the whole "paste" is displayed instantly.

Hello Alan, it would be helpful to know on which website(s) this occurs. Also, which add-ons (extensions) you're using. And finally, do you have Firefox Sync enabled?

I am having the same problem. Doesn't matter what web site...email, facebook amazon, ebay, any misc site at all. I do not have Sync enabled nor any add-ons at all.

The problem doesn't seem to be associated with any particular website. I have no add-ons enabled nor is FireFox Sync enabled. As I mentioned, quitting TenFourFox solves the problem temporarily, and then it slows down again. The keyboard response seems to get longer and longer during a session as I continue to use TenFourFox.

I can't reproduce this at all on my 10.4 G5.

I am having this same issue currently not only on my primary computers - a
pair of PowerMacs (11,2) 2.3 dual and 2.5 quad, but also a G4 iBook, and
two G5 iMacs. However, all are running 10.5.8.

For 10.4 users, I can't make any suggestions. I can't reproduce this on any of the testing systems, and TenFourFox is routinely tested on a quad G5, an iBook G4/1.33, a 1GHz iMac G4 (which I'm typing this reply to you on), and a 450MHz Sawtooth G4.
For 10.5 users, you may wish to try SeaMonkeyPPC (please note it's about six months out of date right now) and see if the problem also occurs there. If it does, this suggests a PowerPC specific issue rather than a TenFourFox specific issue. However, without more information and specific ways to trigger, I won't be able to help you. Bug reports that indicate "problems everywhere" or "on every website" are generally unfixable if I can't reproduce them myself, because there's something about your system that's different than mine and I have no way to account for it.

I can confirm this behavior on 10.5 on websites that do live word count in forms (or otherwise monitor in real time what you're typing) *and* if the browser uses over 600 MB RAM. I can't confirm this in general. Since everything is getting slow when the browser uses very much RAM, I think I don't see this exact problem on my 10.5 PowerBook.

"specific ways to trigger" I'm running Mac OSX 10.5.8. and TenFourFox
31.2.0 (on 5 different PPC Macs as already mentioned), and I have no
add-ons at all installed. I open TenFourFox, go to let's say Facebook or
ebay - though the problem is certainly not confined to those two - and
response is so agonizingly slow it is nearly unusable. If TenFourFox is
for legacy PPC computers I'm just not understanding why it would not be
tested with 10.5.8, the latest OS to run on PPCs.

Thanks, but what can be done...anything, nothing?

Given that I maintain this in my spare time, I don't consider it reasonable I would keep a 10.5 system around just for this -- I don't run 10.5 personally because I require Classic, so I have no need for it.
If a user with a 10.5 system finds an issue and submits a patch, I'll take it. Otherwise, while I make reasonable efforts for 10.5 compatibility to fix problems I can find solutions for, I can't find one for "the whole browser is slow" and I'm not taking shots in the dark that could cause problems for other users.
At this point I could only suggest using another browser. Leopard WebKit is currently maintained and may serve you better. Good luck.

Cameron,
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm running Mac OS 10.4.11, because I too, need Classic.

That makes our systems more similar, which is helpful, but I use the browser daily on my quad G5 with uptimes for a particular build measured in weeks. While the browser does slow somewhat after days and days of continuous use, I've never encountered a slowdown that dramatic, and I do have add-ons installed and various other components.
The same limitation applies, however -- I have to be able to replicate the problem to diagnose it and I can't. If the problem is not in the browser, it could be outside of it. We did have one user where TenFourFox kept crashing when he tried to play audio in it, but this never occurred on the test systems. It turned out to be the audio enhancer he was using. It's possible some other system extension or driver has a similar incompatibility. This is not always fixable, but at least you'd know why. If you were willing, you could set up a clean user account on your 10.4 system, try to run TenFourFox there, and see what difference occurs. To really isolate it would need a clean install on a separate system, of course.
One other option is to run Shark on it while it's running to see what's soaking up the runtime. However, Shark is unwieldy, so if you're not already familiar with how to get snapshots I would try the other options.

Cameron,
I'm going to monitor the CPU usage and memory usage with the activity
manager, and maybe log it.
Thanks for all your help on this...I appreciate it.
When I find something of note, I'll send you an email.
Regards, Alan
