Sending email via Apple Mail now iffy

My stock PPC G4 Apple Mail app 2.1.3 (753.1) began showing quirky difficulty with sending emails after 31. 104Fox update.
Does anyone have this issue?
Is there a recommended update for Mail ?(this is circa 2005-2006)
Apple Mail receives email perfectly from IP source, but the sending side is now very iffy, requiring cagey legerdemain via Outbox and patience. I diagnosed via Mail Windows/ Connection Doctor, and it said all was normal.
